Best Weekend Getaways from Pune: Hill Stations and Beaches Worth the Drive

We've driven Pune families to Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Alibaug, and Goa for years. Here's the honest guide: which places are worth it, what to skip, and what time to leave Pune.

Best Weekend Getaways from Pune: Hill Stations and Beaches Worth the Drive

Every Friday evening, we get calls from Pune: families, couples, groups of friends, all wanting the same thing: "bhaiya, we want to go somewhere for the weekend, suggest something." We've been driving people on these trips for years. So here's the honest breakdown of where to go, when to go, and why — based on what we've seen actually make people happy.

Hill Stations

1. Lonavala and Khandala (65 km, about 1.5 hrs from Pune)

The default Pune weekend trip, and for good reason. It's close, the ghats are beautiful, and there's enough to do for 2 days without planning too hard. In the monsoon (June–September), Bhushi Dam fills up and the entire landscape turns that ridiculous shade of green. People literally drive from Mumbai just to stand in the rain by the dam.

What's actually worth visiting: Tiger's Leap for the view, Karla Caves if you like history (go early, before the crowd), Rajmachi for trekking. Pick up chikki from the shops on the main Lonavala road before leaving. The variety is impressive.

2. Mahabaleshwar (120 km from Pune, 2.5 to 3 hrs)

The classic Maharashtra hill station. The drive through Panchgani is itself beautiful, so don't sleep through it. Mahabaleshwar's viewpoints (Arthur's Seat, Wilson Point, Elephant's Head) are genuinely spectacular on a clear day. In the fog, they're still atmospheric.

Strawberry season is November–February. If you're visiting then, stop at a farm and buy directly from the growers. Much cheaper than the shops, and far fresher. Mapro Garden is worth a stop for the freshly made strawberry jam and the chaat. Skip the boat rides at Venna Lake on weekends; it's too crowded to enjoy.

3. Panchgani (100 km, about 2.5 hrs from Pune)

Often clubbed with Mahabaleshwar, but Panchgani has its own personality. The Table Land (a flat basalt plateau with views on both sides) is the big draw. Bring a jacket because it gets cold quickly after sunset. Sydney Point and Parsi Point are peaceful spots for the evening.

If you're doing Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar together, spend one night in each. Two days is the right amount of time.

4. Matheran (120 km from Pune, 3 hrs to Neral then toy train up)

Matheran is car-free, which means we drop you at Neral and you either take the famous toy train up (about 45 minutes) or a horse ride. It's the right choice for a proper digital detox. No vehicles means no horns, no pollution, just forest and viewpoints. Charlotte Lake is peaceful, the pathways through the trees are good for walking.

Don't go in the monsoon though. Leeches. October to May is ideal.

Beach Getaways

1. Alibaug (150 km from Pune, 3 to 3.5 hrs)

Popular with the Mumbai crowd, but Punekars are catching on too. Alibaug Beach is decent, Kolaba Fort (accessible by boat from the beach) is interesting, and the seafood at the local restaurants is proper coastal Maharashtrian food. Plan for a Saturday night stay. Trying to do it as a day trip is too rushed.

One thing: the road from Khopoli onwards can get very slow on Friday evenings. We recommend leaving Pune by 4 PM at the latest.

2. Kashid Beach (170 km from Pune, about 4 hrs)

Kashid is what Alibaug used to be before it got popular: cleaner water, wider beach, fewer crowds. White sand, some basic resorts along the beach road, and a view of Murud-Janjira Fort from the water. Go between November and February. The rest of the year the sea is rough and the beach is monsoon-battered.

3. Bhimashankar (100 km from Pune, 2.5 hrs)

It's not just a temple visit. Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and has a proper wildlife sanctuary around it. The trek to the temple (for those who want it) goes through forest. The area is genuinely remote and green. A good choice if you want some distance from city noise without going too far.

Planning Tips from Our Drivers

  • Leave early: Friday departures after 6 PM hit traffic badly. Saturday morning before 7 AM is much better.
  • For monsoon trips: Carry a raincoat, not just an umbrella. You'll need both hands free in the ghats.
  • Round trips: Book a return cab in advance on long weekends. The demand spikes and prices go up.
  • With elderly parents or young kids: Sedan is fine for 3-4 people, SUV is significantly more comfortable on longer drives to Mahabaleshwar or Alibaug.
