How to Travel Safely by Intercity Cab: Questions Most Passengers Never Think to Ask

Most safety advice for cab travel is generic. This one isn't. We've run intercity cabs between Pune and Mumbai for years. Here's what actually matters, starting from checking the vehicle before you get in to staying safe on long solo trips.

How to Travel Safely by Intercity Cab: Questions Most Passengers Never Think to Ask

Most safety advice for intercity cab travel is either too obvious ("keep your phone charged") or too paranoid to be practical. We run cabs between Pune, Mumbai, Nashik, and other Maharashtra cities, and most trips are uneventful. But the few times something does go wrong — a breakdown, a route question, a discomfort — it helps enormously if you've done a few basic things right. Here's what we recommend.

Before You Book: What Separates a Reliable Operator from a Random Number

The difference between a good and bad intercity cab experience usually gets decided before the trip starts. A few things worth checking:

Google Reviews, but check the dates. A cab operator with 50 reviews from 3 years ago tells you nothing about 2026. Look for reviews from the last 3–6 months. One-star reviews mentioning "driver didn't show up" or "vehicle was dirty" are more useful than 5-star reviews that just say "good service."

Do they have a proper website or just a WhatsApp number? Operators with a website, GST registration, and an office address have more accountability than someone with only a mobile number. It doesn't guarantee quality, but it's a filter.

What do they send you after booking? Reliable operators confirm the booking in writing — driver name, vehicle number, pickup time. We send an SMS with driver details 30–60 minutes before pickup. If an operator can't tell you the driver's name the day before, that's a red flag.

Commercial permit check: Legally, intercity cabs in Maharashtra must have a commercial permit. These vehicles have yellow number plates or "Tourist Vehicle" printed on the plate. Operators running private vehicles without permits aren't regulated and have no insurance for passengers. Always check.

At Pickup: Two Minutes That Matter

When the cab arrives, it takes less than two minutes to verify the basics — but most people skip this entirely.

Match the vehicle number on your booking confirmation with the actual number plate before opening the door. Especially important if you booked through a broker or aggregator.

Check the driver's ID. Not in a suspicious way — just confirm you're getting into the right cab with the right person. Any professional driver carries their license and an operator ID card. We give all our drivers an intercity.cab ID card for exactly this reason.

Quick vehicle check: Seatbelts working? AC functional? Does the car feel reasonably maintained? You're about to spend 3–9 hours in it depending on the route. Thirty seconds here is worth it.

For women travelling alone: Mention it when booking. Not because it changes the driver, but a good operator will note it, ensure the driver knows, and keep a closer eye on check-ins. At intercity.cab we specifically flag solo women bookings internally.

During the Journey: Simple but Effective

Share live location with at least one person. WhatsApp live location is the easiest — it auto-updates and you don't need to do anything after sending it. For a Pune–Mumbai trip that's 3 hours, tell someone "I'll ping you when I reach." For longer trips like Pune–Goa or an Ashtavinayak yatra, share your live location for the duration.

Keep the driver's number and the operator's number separately. If something happens and the driver isn't reachable, you need to be able to call the operator directly.

Emergency numbers to save before any trip:

  • Police: 100 (or 112 for the national emergency line)
  • Ambulance: 108
  • Women's helpline: 1091
  • Your operator's support number: intercity.cab is +91 73854 75784

On route deviations: Our drivers sometimes take alternate routes due to traffic or road conditions — they'll usually mention it. If a driver deviates significantly without explanation, just ask. A good driver will explain. If you're uncomfortable at any point, ask to stop at a petrol pump, dhaba, or highway rest area and call the operator.

Sit in the back seat on solo trips. Not a rule, just common sense — better visibility of what's around you, easier to exit, and standard practice.

Night Travel on Intercity Routes

A lot of people prefer overnight travel — you sleep through the trip and arrive fresh. Pune–Mumbai overnight is common. A few things to keep in mind:

  • The expressway is well-lit and maintained. Night driving from Pune to Mumbai or back is generally safe with a rested, experienced driver.
  • For longer night trips (Pune–Nashik, Pune–Aurangabad), check when the driver started his day. A driver who's been driving since 6 AM shouldn't be doing a 4-hour night trip at 11 PM. We manage driver schedules to prevent this. Not all operators do.
  • Monsoon nights on ghat sections deserve extra caution. Reduced visibility, slippery roads, and occasional road closures due to landslides. In heavy rain warnings, we proactively call customers to discuss timing.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

Breakdowns happen, even with well-maintained vehicles. Here's the sensible sequence:

  1. Pull over safely (driver should do this)
  2. Call the operator — most good operators have 24/7 support and will arrange a replacement vehicle or mechanic
  3. If you're on the expressway, do not stand on the road — move to the service lane or behind the barrier
  4. If the operator is unresponsive and you're stranded, Maharashtra Highway Police patrols the expressway regularly. Call 112 if needed.

At intercity.cab, we've had breakdowns — every operator has. What matters is response time. We aim to either fix the issue or get a replacement vehicle moving within 30–45 minutes for major routes.

A Few Things People Don't Think to Ask

"Is the vehicle insured for passengers?" — This is a real question to ask any cab operator. Commercial vehicle insurance covers passengers in an accident; private car insurance doesn't. Most professional operators have it; less formal ones often don't.

"Has the driver done this route before?" — Matters on ghat sections, night routes, and airport trips where timing is critical. Our drivers on Pune–Mumbai and airport routes know the expressway well; we assign route-specific drivers where possible.

"What happens if I need to cancel or change pickup time?" — Know this before you book. At intercity.cab, cancellations before 2 hours of pickup are free. Rules vary; ask upfront.

Safe travel doesn't require paranoia. It requires a few minutes of preparation and choosing an operator who takes their side of the responsibility seriously.
